Weather monitoring devices at Kannur Airport

In this blog, we will brief about weather monitoring and devices at KIAL.

Why to monitor weather at airports?

Monitoring of weather at airports are very crucial as landing of aircraft s mainly depending on the weather. The continuous real time information and reports on weather conditions are extremely important for functioning of an Airport.

The meteorological equipment helps pilots and aviation controllers to make serious decision about landing and take off.

What are all measured?
  • Visibility
  • Pressure
  • Wind speed and Direction
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Precipitation
Landing safety is mainly depending on the runway visual range and cloud height near touch down.

Below given some of the weather equipment used in airport and their use

Airport Weather Observation Systems - AWOS

AWOS detect runway condition as well as more problematic weather phenomena such as freezing rain, wind shear and thunderstorms. Below given set of parameters collected for test.
  • Wind Speed
  • Wind Direction
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Dew Point
  • Barometric Pressure (QNH, QFE)
  • Present Weather (Precipitation Identification)
  • Cloud Height and Sky Condition
  • Density Altitude
  • Runway Surface Sensor
  • Solar Radiation
Digital Current Weather Information Systems - DCWIS
DCWIS is a report  generation machine, measures meteorological parameters, derives other parameters through the artificial intelligence technology and generates aviation weather reports.

Real time Airport Lightning information – GLD

This system provides Present weather thunderstorm reporting, Low level wind shear watches, Cloud to ground lightning warnings for outdoor personnel; Thus it helps to avoid thunderstorm hazards and lightning strikes to airplanes.

KIAL - What are all the devices installed to monitor weather till date?

KIAL has advanced weather equipment and an Instrument Landing System (ILS) which includes runway visual range (RVR) system and an aviation weather monitoring system (AWMS)

RVR & AWMS was developed by combinely the team from CSIR - NAL(National Aerospace Laboratorie) - IMD(Indian Meteorological Department )
